Figurski at Findhorn on Acid:The Scholarly Edition

by Richard Holeton

Findhorn commune in Scotland Ralph the swimming pig at Aquarena Springs. Cans of Hormel Foods' Spam

In celebration of its 20th year anniversary, Richard Holeton's cult classic Figurski at Findhorn on Acidis coming to the web as an open-access archival version and scholarly edition.

This hypertext novel, originally published by Eastgate Systems, Inc. in 2001 on CD-ROM, remains today one of the only comic works of hypertext fiction. Its ironic humor riffs off pop culture and countercultural elements like Ralph the Swimming Pig, Spam (ubiquitous in American kitchens), communes like Findhorn, The David Letterman Show, and many others, to capture the zeitgeist of the 1990s.

Work will take place over two phases. Phase 1, the archival version, is slated for completion on May 15, 2021 and entails the migration of the site into HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Phase 2, the overlay of the critical commentary that constitutes the scholarly edition, will follow.

Researchers working with Holeton to create this scholarly edition include Dene Grigar, Mariusz Pisarski, and Michael Tratner. Production of the site, which recreates the 354 nodes and 2001 links of the original work, is taking place at the Electronic Literature Lab at Washington State University Vancouver by Betsy Hanrahan, Kathleen Zoller, Holly Slocum, and Greg Philbrook.
