Findhorn: The Foundation began fitting solar panels on its
structures in 1991; by the mid-90s
a multifaceted ecological building program was in full swing. Community members built the first-of-its-kind
natural sewage treatment facility that produced a high-quality effluent using only natural bacteria, algae,
plants, and fish. The Eco-Village project — which included the use of cellulose insulation, non-toxic
organic
paints and preservatives, locally grown and harvested timber, local stone, and natural clay tile roofing —
was
intended to replace the historic but aging residence and guest trailers. The appearance of three strange
visitors in late 1993 and early 1994, all seemingly in pursuit of the same mechanical pig, was nothing unusual
for Findhorn, which had always attracted eccentric seekers from all over the planet. When these same visitors
returned all at once in 1997, however, some residents were concerned.
