The Holodeck: Upgrades to the USS
Enterprise made by the Bynars in
year 2364 gave Holodeck
characters more dynamic interactivity. Next Generation's Reginald Barclay reprises
his role in a Voyager
episode, using a Holodeck program to befriend the simulated Voyager crew in order to communicate with the real
Voyager crew, who are lost in the Delta Quadrant. In another episode, Voyager Captain Kathryn Janeway reprograms
an Irish bartender on the Holodeck, fashioning him into a custom-made lover. One of the main characters on
Voyager, The Doctor, is himself a holographic simulation who uses a portable emitter
that allows him to roam
freely outside the Holodeck. Frequently, ambiguity about the distinctions between reality, fictional reality,
and virtual reality results from Holodeck malfunctions or human design, as when a clever program precisely
mirrors the “outside” layer of reality. (The ample curves of Voyager's former Borg
drone, Seven of Nine —
emphasized by her form-fitting uniform obviously intended to boost the show's ratings — are, however, no
illusion.) In some Holodeck scenarios, a hidden inner door called the arch — which
participants may materialize with a verbal command — serves as the border between the simulation and the
real-life
starship.
